TREC in Portugal!
From 4-6th November the
Portugese
Trec Championships took place, and brave British competitors (with a
support team of judges) flew out, hired horses that weren't used to
TREC and Team GB came second in the team competition by one point! What
an achievement (and the lucky devils got a last minute top up of their
tans in the glorious sunshine!)
The POR took in a variety of
Portugese scenes, from a town to thick forest and over a very large
river! The route had been drawn in fluorescent marker rather than the
gel pens that we're used to, but all riders enjoyed the weather and the
route.
Riders and places were as
follows:
Vanessa Warren 2nd overall to a Portugese rider, with the French World
Championship bronze medallist behind her in 3rd place,
Ian Macalindin 5th,
Hilary Barnard 6th,
Hilary Stephens 9th,
Fiona Thurnell 10th, with
Kathryn Bean 5th Young Rider in her first ever foreign TREC. Judges
were Sarah Thurnell (Chef d'Equipe),
Andy Chappell
and Peter Bean.

The Kelly Marks Perfect Partners BHS TREC Winter
Series 2005
The BHS are pleased to announce that new winter TREC competitions are
being run in partnership with Kelly Marks, comprising the control of
paces and PTV sections, ideal for addicted treccies to get a fix in the
winter, and for newcomers to get a taste of what to expect in
competition without having to read a map!
There will be novice and open sections, and winners of each competition
will receive a signed copy of Kelly's new book 'Perfect Partners'.
Results will be converted into percentages for a rankings table in each
section, with the highest percentage being awarded the Kelly Marks
Perfect Partners BHS TREC Winter Trophy at the end of the season.
for more details about the format of the competition, and here
for the calendar of events around the country.
WHTG hope to announce a venue and date for such a competition in the
near future, if you would like to be involved with running or hosting a
winter TREC, please contact Fiona or Rob in the BHS Competitions Office
at competitions@bhs.org.uk
or call 08701 202244.

Newton Level 2 & 2A
TREC
17th & 18th September 2005
This weekend's WHTG TREC competition once again brought
great
weather with it, unfortunately April's teddy bears didn't make a
reappearance but the POR and PTV were both fantastic, each providing
challenges and delights for all riders. The level 2A class gave
competitors the chance to have a go at riding bearings and grid
reference sections found in level 3 and 4 competitions, without having
to contend with the longer distances and larger PTV and the competition
was an excellent end to the summer TREC season for most WHTG
members. Many thanks must go to the organisers, Jane Toft and
Lisa Ashby, and all those who turned out to help at the wonderful venue
of Newton House Farm!

Riding Clubs Team
Endurance
Mary Weston, Sarah Thurnell, Lisa Ashby and Jane Toft
represented the
club at this 32km riding challenge in Melton Mowbray, where they all
had to ride as close to 11kmph as possible and the team with the best
average won. The crewing, regular breaks, well signed route and known
checkpoints made things a bit easy for these seasoned TREC competitors
but they all enjoyed it and came 2nd - well done team!

Riding Clubs Dressage
and
Showjumping Finals, Newark
Our intrepid dressage queens Fiona, Kate, Julie and Sarah gave fine performances in the rain
at the National RC Finals - Kate was 3rd in her arena, and Sarah 10th,
with Fiona and Julie unplaced in their arenas but still contributing to
an impressive 9th place for the team overall!
Unfortunately the Showjumping team weren't placed, but they too put up
a good show.
Treccies really are a multi-talented bunch, many thanks to the teams
and their supporters, here's to next year!

This was a really informative day, where we all picked
up some
great
advice, whether just considering level 3, trying to improve at level 2
or seasoned competitors at level 4, despite the soggy weather for the
afternoon practical session. Many thanks to Alex Wells for
organising it. If any members would like some maps to practice on,
please send a large SAE to Sarah Thurnell (address in
newsletters). We may even put some grid reference puzzles on the
website if you would like to test yourselves - please email saraht@white-horse-trec.co.uk

STOP
PRESS!
White Horse Treccies trounce the opposition!
Our club
fielded
dressage and show jumping teams in the novice classes at the BRC Area
16 qualifiers at Newark Showground on the 5th June!
Novice Showjumping: The day started
well with our wonderful SJ team ALL jumping double
clear, so going forward for the jump-off against two other clubs. After
fairly interminable hanging about while scores were deliberated and
rules discovered, the jump off finally started. We had to go first!
Sarah C with Chester was first of all and jumped a good clear. Siobhan
Avis and Val Carpenter also jumped clear, with Julie Brook just tipping
an unlucky pole. The
next team had two clears and two with faults so it was real nail-biting
stuff as the last team went in. First rider - refusal and fall! Then
all their remaining three jumped clear. So it was all down to the times
of the best three in each team. After a nerve racking wait we were
announced as the winners to whoops of delight! Individually, Siobhan
was 5th and Val 6th (results taken from the team rounds).

Our successful SJ team with their rosettes! Picture courtesy of Lisa
Ashby.
Novice Dressage: All riders were in
different arenas, but their successes added up to another team win! The
team consisted of
Sarah C on Chester (2nd), Fiona Thurnell on Brilyn
Bashful Barney (3rd), Julie Brook on Mooch (4th) and Kate Leonard on
Jack (5th). Well done also for good efforts by Faye H on Jane Toft's
Spangles, a replacement mount, Emily on Wolves, Val Carpenter with
Matheus Rose and Alex
Wells with Toffee. Fiona Thurnell and Brilyn Bashful Barney were also
3rd (Ind.) in
Riders test 6, so it was a fantastic day all round.
Both teams
have
now qualified for the National Finals at Lincoln on 10-11 September!
Fiona with
Brilyn
Bashful Barney, and Kate and Fiona with the day's
spoils! Pictures by L Ashby.
Well done to
all
competitors for such fantastic results, many thanks to team managers
Jane Toft (SJ) and Kate Leonard (D) and thanks to the contingent of
members/parents/friends who helped out and cheered the competitors on!

Robin Hood TREC Part
Two - CP
and PTV at Newton Cross Country
Once again the weather was glorious, so some teddies
came to
sit and
have a picnic in the middle of the PTV course, which gave some
competitors cause for concern! The course was well designed and
riders, horses, judges and organisers had a good day out. During the
schooling rounds, Michelle Roe unfortunately fell off requiring a
hospital visit, thankfully she is home and ok apart from bruises. We
hope you make a full recovery soon, Michelle.

BHS TREC
Judges
Training Day run by White Horse TREC
Group.
Caythorpe EC, Grantham, Lincolnshire. Report by Louise.
Some forty
people turned out to the Training
Day, mainly from White Horse TREC Group (WHTG), both old and new
members, with
some keen visitors from as far afield as Cambridgeshire and the West
Midlands.
It was an extremely chilly day but the potential judges all managed to
stay
cheerful in spite of the cold. The instruction from Rob Jones, Director
BHS
TREC, was great. In the morning we covered POR and Control of Paces
Judging and
most of the theory behind PTV Judging, whilst the afternoon session
dealt with
remaining theory, a chance to test our knowledge with real riders and a
question session for any remaining queries. We had a number of guinea
pig
riders and horse/ponies, all members of WHTG, who provided a chance for
us to
practise our PTV judging on them.

Roz and Hazel listening to Rob Jones, and Roxanne with Ripple testing
the water.
Each
participant on the training day was given a copy of
the new (2005) rulebook at the beginning of the day, and by the end we
all felt
pretty knowledgeable. The training day was a brilliant event and a must
for
anyone involved in BHS TREC, whether to train as a Judge or just to
gain better
scores.
