WHTG Development Squad for 2010

With the forthcoming European TREC Champioships in Austria less than 9 months away, it is already time for those of you who are interested in representing Great Britain to register their interest with the BHS (see attached link).  With this in mind, WHTG are trying to create a development squad aimed at those members who are interested in selection for the junior and senior Team GB.  Subsidsed training events would be held, focused on improving selection chances and performance at competitions.  In return, members of the development squad would help members at club training events.  It is anticipated squad members would help out and train at a training event and then more advanced training of the same type would be given to the development squad members either on the same weekend or a suitable date.

If you are interested in joining the development squad please send an e-mail to Daniel@white-horse-trec.co.uk and don't forget to send off your form to the BHS, the deadline is 8th Jan 2010! http://www.bhs.org.uk/Riding/BHS_TREC/International_competition/European_Championships.aspx

Captain Cooks TREC 26/27 September
Report by Paula Scott

I was very disappointed that there were so few entries but decided to go ahead with an event (a training ride) as many people had offered to help and much time had gone into route planning and the PTV. From a personal point of view if I have planned to go to something I would be annoyed and frustrated if it were cancelled.

A big thank you to those who still came and I don't think you were disappointed. The weather was fantastic and the views from the top of the Cooks were to die for on Saturday. I know Peter Bean was ever so pleased to be a 'ticket' up there. Sunday was used as training for CoP and PTV.

Next year I will be hosting a main event so watch out. Lastly I would like to thank all who helped - Peter and Paula Bean, Katie Morgan for help with the route and my livery yard owner who helped with the construction of the PTV course.

Hope to see you all next year!

Paula Scott

Chair's note:
You might have thought it a long way to go but it is only about an hour from York to this venue and I can say that you missed the most amazing location for a spectacular weekend. On our arrival we all stood in awe just looking at what lay ahead of the riders - Paula had said that it was a lovely area and she was correct. I won't tell you any more but I hope you make sure that the date for the TREC here next year is put in your diary in good time as it is not to be missed! Details will be on the website.

Derbyshire Dales BHS TREC 26-27 July

The event was held on the weekend of 25th & 26th July 2009. This was an exciting new venue that had been stumbled on when I used the UK Chasers course last September.

Catherine Thornely and Philip Potter are the owners of the UK chasers course. I was so impressed when I rode the course that the idea was hatched that it would make an excellent venue for the Derbyshire Dales Trec. Catherine and Philip had little idea what was involved in Trec but were willing to learn what was required to have a successful trec competition. The POR was set in the rolling Derbyshire Hills where we are not blessed with an abundance of bridleways.

The routes can never be over challenging in the area as the orienteering is split between quiet lanes and off road riding. Mark Kendrick was the Senior TD and paid a visit to the site in April. Between the two of us and with input from my husband, we managed to put together what we thought would be a decent and technical POR for all levels. We stumbled across a 1920’s map of the area and felt that this would be a worthy challenge for part of the route.  Many of the level 3 & 4’s seemed to get a little misplaced on the first section of the map and 2 or 3 cleverly placed manned tickets caught many of the riders out at all levels.

The scores at the end of the first day proved that we had achieved what we set out to do. The POR proved to be both challenging and rewarding for all levels.

The second day brought the challenge of what was described to me as, “ a rather cheeky COG” The corridor was in an “S” with an extra link on the end. A worthy challenge that I heard referred to “as a product of a warped mind!” I admit it was my idea and I thought it would be a serious but different twist on the normal challenge. The level 3 & 4’s were the first to go, they had varying degrees of success. Anthea Kendrick achieved the best score for level 3 & 4 with an impressive 47 points. The COG was then changed in the afternoon for the level 2 riders after the rain had made the ground a little slippery. They still had a challenging bend running down hill where Jane Williams achieved the highest score of 47.

The PTV was set around the UK chasers course. Because of the variation available we were able to set differing routes for each level with the low branches being set between two impressive jumps and the corridor very close behind a fence. The course was a good “ galloping” course but because of the inclement weather it was decided to give the competitors a very lenient time so as not to push the riders on the ground. Nearly all the riders completed well within the time. The most satisfying thing as the organiser was to see so many happy people leaving the course after completing. The PTV course allowed the riders to take full advantage of the ground the chasers course is set over, encompassing nearly 3km of beautiful undulating Derbyshire countryside.

Hilary Barnard achieved the best PTV score with a very impressive 148 points. The rain never dampened the spirits of either the competitors or the army of judges that helped during the day.

All in all a good time was had by all and the competitors are keen to return back to the venue next year. We are already starting to hatch a plan to provide the riders with an enjoyable but challenging competition.

Finally a huge thank you to Catherine and Philip for making us so welcome even to the point where new stand pipes were put into the fields for the competitors, the army of judges and helpers that made this event run so smoothly and without these competitions would not happen, Mark Kendrick for helping make the competition what it was and to my husband who has walked miles and given up an awful lot of our free time working on this.

Widmerpool TREC Training 13 June

Lisa Ashby and I ran a Novice unmounted training day at Widmerpool on Sat 13th June. 10 people attended, mostly non-members, and almost all are planning to compete at the TREC here on 5th July. We started by giving an overview of the three phases, then kitted up myself and my horse Calico for the POR to demonstrate the equipment needed. We had a number of PTV obstacles set up plus a control of paces, which Lisa talked everyone through and Calico and I demonstrated. After lunch, we covered the POR in detail, did an introduction to map reading and timing plus basic compass skills, then everyone practised marking up a level 2 route in real time. Finally the group divided into pairs and did a short 'on foot' POR around the farm, complete with 'good' and 'bad' tickets. This did not start off as a competition but had turned quite competitive by the end! Feedback from the day was very positive and Lisa and I would like to thank everyone for coming, and we look forward to seeing everyone on July 5th.

NB Entries are still open for the competition at Widmerpool until Friday 26 June - this is an excellent new venue so please support it! The schedule is here. Helpers are also still needed, so if you can give up some time please contact alex@white-horse-trec.co.uk

Crockey Hill TREC 5/6 June

The rain came down so hard on Friday evening as competitiors arrived at Pool Bridge Farm, Crockey Hill, Nr York and on Saturday morning there was a few sleepless looking competitiors about the field including officials! I received calls asking "is it on?" - "of course it is" I said and the heavy grey clouds stayed away - we were in for a good riding weather weekend.

The weekend went well right from the start and everyone seemed to have an enjoyable time. We had 51 competitiors - a range of Level 3, 2 and 1 competitiors both experienced and new to TREC who went out and tackled what Denise, Kathryn and Nigel had planned for them - and they came back smiling. The routes took into account the levels and experience of the competitors - some perhaps a bit longer than normal but in order to show you some of our local area - that was necessary - but at least we have no hills!!

Saturday evening there was a good BBQ put on by the Fletcher family and the food was excellent.  Mary Weston held another charity quiz and even the fishermen took part making a total of £150 - well done.

Sunday was fine and bright and the PTV ready for action. Peter and Trevor had been out for weeks deciding on all the natural looking corners and paths and we even had planned a ride up and ride down - great, a hill, we thought - until Thursday evening when Peter arrived on site and the top soil had been sold and the hill had disappeared so back to the drawing board!! Hard to believe but true. So that is why you rode down to the rein-back and over the fence jump on the other side - that made it 15 obstacles then Denise came up with the idea of the new mount (not been done before at WHTG) so that was our 16 obstacles. Everyone came back buzzing and had loved it.

That is just a brief overveiw of the weekend.  Already we have received mails from you saying thanks and that makes it worthwhile.

Like everything it would not have taken place without so many people helping and again you all came up trumps - thank you judges especially those who gave up their whole weekend and travelled a number of miles to do so - very much appreciated. Thanks must go to Denise Robinson our TD for the many hours that she had put into this event with, of course, the never ending help of Nigel. Thanks to Kathryn who found the venue and planned out the routes then with advice and assistance it all came together - a difficult task for a first timer! Peter planned and made the PTV over a number of weeks and with the help of Trevor it again came together. Thanks to Peter, Trevor and our friend David for helping with this hard, manual task.

There was a photographer on site www.zuuq.co.uk and I hope you will support Andrew with this. Thanks to Escrick Park Estates/Rideway, local landowners and to Mickey Fletcher & brothers at Pool Bridge Farm for allowing us on their land and property.

The PTV scores may look a bit low to some experienced competitors, but they are only out of 130 at Level 2 (we put one 'dummy' one into the scoring program which everyone got 10 points for) and out of 140 at Level 3, rather than the usual 160.

Brooksby Indoor TREC 22 March

NEW! Photos - click 'view your pictures' then 'events' and the relevant album.

We used a new photographer Dave Gravelis this time and the delay in getting the photos out was due to teething problems getting the website up and running. Dave would appreciate feedback good or bad on the website and his photos and the service he offers - he has not done a horse event before. Please email feedback to jane@white-horse-trec.co.uk and she will pass it on to him.

Results can now be downloaded here. Thank you to all judges and helpers!

We had a beautiful day for the Brooksby TREC, it was just a shame that we had to stay indoors! We had a good turn-out of just under 50 competitors despite the fact that we accidentally clashed with Mother's Day.

We had an unusual problem at the start - the judges were all in place, we were ready to start on time... but there were no competitors! Due to an early withdrawal and a few late arrivals the collecting ring was bare apart from one rider. The judges got an early coffee break while some later riders who had arrived early kindly went off to tack up their horses and fill the gap, so we were soon underway.

We tested a few of the obstacles from the new rule book such as mounting from a block (a welcome addition I think most would agree!) which everyone was made to do offside to avoid it being too easy, and the path crossing (ridden ditch followed by hedge) which seemed to ride well.

Daniel Nolan, WHTG member and also member of the GB TREC team last year, won the Open convincingly with 85.63%, and was not even riding his usual TREC horse who is currently injured. Second was Ina West with Forester, and third was Jan Oldham riding Josh.

The Newcomers class included possibly the biggest horse ever to be seen at a TREC, who at 19hh was too big to be ridden under our low branches thus this became a led obstacle for this class. Non-member Gillian Garratt won this section riding Montessa with a score of 63.13%. Second was Susannah Lee riding Daisy and third was a delighted Donna-Marie Townsend with Tia Maria.

Organisers Jane and Lisa would like to thank all the willing helpers who made the day run so smoothly - we couldn't do it without you. We had no shortage of people volunteering to judge. Special thanks must go to Andy, a club member and experienced international judge who spent the day helping and explaining the finer points of the rules to those who were new to judging, and some who were not so new - including myself! Her advice was very well received and I had many comments that you really learn a lot from judging and watching others ride.

Photographs of the day will be available soon from Dave Gravelis, YPS Photography - link will go up here when available.

BRC Area 16 Hunter Trials Report by Jackie Bennett

Well done Team WHTG! We entered two teams and one individual in the Area Hunter Trials held at Epworth XC Course. The first team consisted of Jackie Bennett, Daniel Nolan, Helen Paine and Ina West, the second team was Amanda Renshaw, David Gough, Lynn Mabbitt and Kerrine Oliver, and we were also lucky enough to have Alison Elmer as an individual competitor/reserve.

The morning of the Cross Country dawned a fabulous spring morning - one of those days when you are happy to be alive and keen to compete... until you walk the course! There proved to be a lot of technical as well as challenging questions on the course to be asking our TREC horses and riders but we weren't phased or worried in the slightest!! The format of the event has changed this year so our intrepid riders had to not only perform across country but prior to this complete a show jumping course.

The SJ proved not too difficult with Daniel, Ina, Helen, Kerrine and Alison all achieving clear rounds. The others got various faults but nothing to worry about.

From the SJ the riders went straight onto the XC. Jackie was the first rider to go and after a cheeky runout in the SJ she was ready for a challenge on the XC course, which rode fabulously well - the going could not have been better. There were concerns from Amanda as Bill is barefoot and the take offs and landings had been stoned but he, like everyone else, ate up the ground. Jackie, Lynn, Kerrine and Alison all completed clear althought with various time faults, but the other riders all completed the course which was a huge achievement for us in itself.

It was fantastic to see the riders go out with the intrepidation of what would happen and come back with such happy smiling faces. Team manager Jackie was proud to have represented the club with the 8 other members, who all proved that they can do far more than they ever imagined and had great fun along the way!

The first team came in a credible 7th and the second team 9th out of 15 - not bad for a load of TRECies!

A huge thank you to all the competitors for giving it a go, and to Liz, Mick, Jane and Fiona who all gave up their day to judge, along with Andy and Dave who looked after the judges and kept an eye on the scores.

Here's to next year!

8 February

Trent Valley EC Indoor TREC cancelled

Unfortunately this event was cancelled due to the adverse weather conditions.

This decision was not taken lightly - several local committee members all agreed that not only was it unsafe for the club's equipment trailer to be taken to the venue prior to the event so that it could be set up because of the icy conditions, but also that they would not be happy to travel their horses either early (because of the ice) or late (because of the horrendous forecast).

WHTG would always rather have all competitors, horses and volunteers intact than run the rather too high risk of incident or injury in such bad conditions.

Entries can be transferred to Brooksby indoor TREC 22 March or refunded - please see events page.

26 January

BRC Area 16 Dressage, Trent Valley EC 10 February

Well done WHTG! Our first team riders Ruth O'Keeffe, Fi Thurnell, Jan Oldham and Philippa Archer secured 6th place out of 20 teams. Ruth came 3rd out of 37 riders in the Novice test, and Fi was 12th out of 38 in the Prelim. Kerrine Oliver, Terri Amber and Niki Philips made up the second team. Thank you to everyone who came to help and cheerlead!

Special thanks go to Lisa Ashby for arranging for her friend to lend Ruth a saddle due to Ruth's tack being stolen a few days before this event.
